SOCIAL PROTECTION IN THE REGION

Social protection systems seek to address vulnerability, hardship, and risk over the course of people’s lives. In the Pacific and Timor-Leste, there is variation between countries in terms of how well-established systems are, who they are designed to reach, and the proportion of the population they cover.

Australia has a longstanding commitment to reducing poverty and enhancing stability and prosperity in our region and is already supporting national social protection systems in a number of countries.
